MANEL ARMENGOL: ART / INFO / PRESS

BIO:

1949. Born in Badalona, Barcelona, SPAIN.

Studies journalism at Barcelona's CIC.

1971. Free-lance journalist with several Barcelona and Madrid daily papers and magazines.

1975. Studies photography - to illustrate his reports - at the Joaquín Muntaner Center.

1976. Barcelona. Photos of a demonstration for freedom: These become the symbolic reference to Spain's political transition; They have been published by Paris-Match, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Le Nouvel Observateur, New Reporter, Der Spiegel, Stern and more, as well as in several books and other press media during the past 28 years.

1976-80. Professional Photographer specializing in social reports for several weekly magazines (Interviú, Primera Plana, Ciudadano, etc.)

1977-78. U.S.A. Correspondent for Interviú, weekly magazine.

1979 Special Correspondent for Play Boy Spain in China, work theme: Today's unknown China.

1980. First photo exhibition. Spectrum-Canon Gallery, Barcelona.

1982. Moves to La Casa Milá, La Pedrera, a masterpiece of Antonio Gaudi, the Architect.
Begins recovery from a severe accident that ends his photojournalism career.

1983. First night photographs of La Pedrera´s rooftop chimneys and architecture.

1984. Continues recovery. Initially doing action photography, now works focusing on observing quiet spaces and lights.

1985-2000. Works for several German, Japanese, French, and American Publishers of architecture photography and picture. (Casa Vogue, Connaissance des Arts, db Architecture. Books: Artesanía de España, Separad-Sefarad, Barcelonas, Domus Isozaki, etc.) Travels to Peru, Venezuela, Burma, China.

1985. Starts working on the “Fuego” (Fire) collection.

1987. "El Jardín de los Guerreros", (The Garden of the Warriors), publisher by Lunwerg Publishers in 8 languages. The book is a collection of his night photographs of Gaudi´s La Pedrera.

1989. Works on a series of large color photos of Barcelona´s architecture, on the theme of "Fantastic Art", with Victoria Cirlot, Professor of Medieval Art.

1993. Starts working on "Wind" and "Water", as part of his black and white Series on "The Elements", and does his own film development alter twelve years away from the dark room...

1993. Associate Professor at Bellaterra´s University Department of Audio-visual Science and Communication in Barcelona.

2001. Publication of "Voices of Water" and "Memories of Winds", featuring poems of friend Elia Taniguchi, by Shiseido Word Publishers in Tokyo.

2000-03. Travels to New York, Nepal, Dahramsala, India, and Tokyo: reports and exhibitions.

2003. Travels to Iceland: black and white exhibition of landscapes.

2004. Works on "Herbarium" a large black and white format.
Photography course for Journalism students at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona.
MNAC (Catalonia National Museum of Art) acquires photographs on Demonstrations '76s for the Permanent Collection.

2005. "Portraits of herbs" exhibition of 88 photographs in the Botanical Institute of Barcelona. Small serie called "Paris notebook".

2006. New b/w work whith cristallized minerals (in progress). Editing the book HERBARIUM.

2007. Issue of the book HERBARIUM, with Margaret Hooks text "Manel Armengol: Seeing the world in a grain of sand", published by Turner Editors, Madrid. The book is presented at Colectania Foundation, Barcelona. Assignement for the CRDI (Research Center and Image Difussion) from the City Council of Girona. New works b/w on nature (water) in Ports de Besseit, Horta de Sant Joan, Tarragona, for a exhibit.
